If you’re not listening to podcasts already, you should be! I use podcasts to learn random trivia, expand my personal & professional development, and also just to laugh! Here’s 7 of my favorite podcasts I think everyone should be listening to (updated July 2020)

  1. STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW: I’ve been listening to SYSK since about 2013, but they’ve been doing their show since 2008! Josh & Chuck are OG podcasters, and this is the perfect show for you if you like random trivia and funny tangents. I’ve listened to all of their 1200+ episodes, but that doesn’t stop me from going back and listening to old episodes multiple times. (PS they’ve got a book coming out this fall!)
  2. MY FAVORITE MURDER: SSDGM! The sign-off from my FAVORITE true crime podcast, hosted by Karen Kilgariff & Georgia Hardstark. I’ve gone to two of their live shows, and the community of murderinos is incredible 😊 If you’re into true crime and comedy mixed in a tasteful way, check them out! (They also wrote a book if you’re into reading too! It’s called Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered)
  3. BINGE MODE: Hellllooooooo!! Mallory & Jason go in depth on different shows and movies in pop culture, and are HILARIOUS the whole time! I binged their whole series on Game of Thrones while preparing for season 8 (before we knew it was hot garbage), and thanks to them I caught details that I had missed in my last rewatch! They’ve also done the entire Harry Potter universe, which was incredible listening to them go through the books and movies, and they went through all of Star Wars canon (I wasn’t super excited about this at first, but their great commentary made me go back and watch all the movies!) The latest thing I’ve done thanks to them is read the comic Saga written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. I borrowed it using the Hoopla library app, but I liked it so much I want to buy a hard copy when the series is done!
  4. CRIMINAL: This is not your typical true crime show. Phoebe Judge tells stories of people who have done wrong in the past, but maybe not in the way that you’re thinking. She has such a soothing voice that you may be tempted to play this in the background, but once you start hearing details of these stories, you’re gonna want to pay attention! There’s over 140 episodes, each one about 30 minutes long, so they’re great for shorter car rides (I used to listen on the train to class for grad school and it was the perfect length of time for my trip!)
  5. THE NOD: Get ready to hear stories about Black culture that you may not have heard before! Brittany and Eric have been friends since college, and you can hear in their voices just how close they are as friends and how passionate they are about celebrating Black culture. Listening to the two of them tell these stories makes me so proud to be Black! (UPDATE: The Nod is now a show on Quibi! I haven’t watched it, but they’ve been sharing some of that content on their podcast feed.)
  6. THIS PODCAST WILL KILL YOU: Have you ever gone down a Wikipedia rabbit hole looking up information on random diseases? Oh, just me? Well the two Erin’s who host this podcast have done that already, and they’re ready to tell you all about it! They’re both disease ecologists and epidemiologists, so they know what they’re talking about! Some episodes include how vaccines work, ricin poisoning, toxoplasmosis, e. coli, and caffeine. Listen to this if you want to learn some SCIENCE!
  7. THE SHEXSHINES PODCAST: Anna-Laura and Alex are on a mission to help other female entrepreneurs build their businesses the best way! They’ve got a whole community of badass women who help each other out (that I’m proud to be a part of!) and on the podcast, they interview different business women and share advice to help you grow your own business. These ladies are so down to earth and easy to listen to! I’ve binged almost all of their episodes already, but they’re great resources to go back to!
