DIY Ombre Nails | Skittle Manicure Tutorial

Scrolling through Instagram, I’ve been seeing a lot of ombre manicures- each nail is a different color, and together they make a gradient. (Apparently it’s called a Skittle Manicure- how cute!) It’s super cute and trendy right now, and some brands are promoting manicure kits where you can purchase 5 bottles of polish to get the same look. I knew I could get the same look using just 2 bottles of polish I already had (#nospend!)

WHAT I USED

  • Jamberry Smoothing Base Coat
  • Jamberry polishes in Hint of Mint & Finders Keepers
  • Seche Vite quick dry top coat – I bought mine from Target
  • Holo Taco scattered holographic top coat (or ‘taco’ for those in the know 💿)

Tutorial

I started by applying the smoothing base coat to each of my nails. I deal with ridges and peeling nails, so this helps give me a smooth base to work on, and it helps the polish last longer. On a paper plate I poured out some of the darker green shade first, adding a little more to each blob. I poured some of the lighter mint shade on top doing the same, with the hopes of getting 3 distinct shades of green. I did have to add a little more mint to the last two blobs to lighten them more. Once I got the colors I wanted, I used a cleaned off nail polish brush (from an old bottle of nail oil) to paint my nails! I used the pure mint shade on my pinky and the pure green on my thumb, then finished the gradient on my other fingers with my newly made shades. NOTE: paint the fingers using colors straight from the bottles first because the shades on the plate will dry pretty quickly, so you’ll need to act fast once they’re the shades you want. Top it off with the quick dry top coat, and you’re done!

Pretty simple, but a really cute effect! This was my first time trying this and I’ll definitely be doing it again with other colors 🙂 Once on my nails the mixed shades don’t look all that different, so next time I’ll work on making them more distinct (on the plate they looked different than how they dried).

I couldn’t leave it plain (not fun enough for me) so I added a coat of Holo Taco on top, and then another layer of top coat. The sparkles really tie the shades together, and it’s so fun to look at all the shifty rainbows!
